Adobe AIR 2.7 - Release review

The wait is finally over as Adobe released their most speedy version of AIR on 14th June, 2011 for all the major platforms Desktop (Windows, MacOS) and Mobile (Android 2.2+, iOS 4+, BlackBerry Tablet OS*).
* AIR 2.7 for BlackBerry Tablet OS will be available via OTA (over the air) update by the end of June.

Also, an already promised update for Flash Builder 4.5 should be out very soon with the support of AIR 2.7 on all the platforms.

The Bad News: Adobe didn't release AIR 2.7 for Linux OS. Now, that is something I never expected to happen. AIR is known for being a true cross-platform runtime. By dropping support for Linux leaves us with two options for desktops (Windows and MacOS). There are many people out there who use Linux as their primary operating system. They used to install AIR apps on Linux without any problems, Now, they will be able to use only those apps which were built on AIR 2.6 SDK.

They have given their reasons here and said: "We will no longer be releasing our own versions of Adobe AIR and the AIR SDK for desktop Linux, but expect that one or more of our partners will do so."
Some more explanation about the usage of AIR on Linux is discussed in this blog post.

I hope that Adobe's partners in OSP (Open Screen Project) will take good care of AIR releases on desktop Linux, otherwise, the cross-platform status of Adobe AIR will be little damaged.

What do you think about Adobe's decision to drop AIR on Linux and focus only on Mobile and more famous desktop platforms.

Flash On!
